took me forever to get this to work. so ill save it for future reference.
open the termina. and you need to include the full path to the Render command.
heres the command (based on where my Maya is installed):
/Applications/Alias/maya7.0/Maya.app/Contents/bin/Render -r mr -s 34 -e 120 /Path/to/file/maya_file.mb
mr is a flag for mental ray, -s is start -e [...]
